Teacher’s Role in Developing Speaking Skills

Language is a communication platform through which our thoughts and ideas can be shared with others. To develop English speaking skills, we should also focus on listening skills, because both speaking and listening skills are interlinked to each other and both of these contribute for basic communication skills.

Here are some tips to be followed by teacher to develop English speaking skills in students:

1. Make children listen to English Channels

Children will listen to the pronunciation of words when they watch English news or movies. This will improve their fluency by listening and repeating. Make them practice; learn expressions and new vocabulary each day.

2. Use the School Resources Effectively

Give them a topic and ask them to talk it in front of a mirror. Watch their face, mouth and body language. Use your smart phone to record speech and give them feedback. This can help them to check out what kind of words or sentences they are troubling with.

3. Give Importance to Fluency, not to Grammar

While evaluating them as a teacher do not give importance to the correction of grammar, it may stop them from giving a speech and make them feel less confident and less comfortable. Encourage students to learn speaking fluently and then slowly correct the grammar.

4. To do Activities with Students

  • Play with some pair of words, ask the students to find out the difference.
  • Give them minimal pairs cat-bat, wide-wise, kite-night, ride–road and ask them to identify the meaning.
  • Teach students phonetics and stresses.
  • Encourage them to write a diary in English.
  • Let them start thinking in English.
  • Ask students to communicate with friends and family in English.

Activities for beginners are not so interesting and useful to the seniors every time. We need to select the activities based on student’s age and grasping level so that it is easy for us to develop the English speaking skills in them.
